Quick Reading & General Knowledge

Reading Comprehension

Jamie and her little brother Sam went to the seaside with their grandad on a sunny Saturday. They packed a picnic with sandwiches, apples, and a big bottle of lemonade. When they arrived, Sam ran straight towards the waves, laughing loudly, while Jamie stayed on the sand to build a tall sandcastle with a deep moat around it. After lunch, grandad took them rockpooling and they found a small crab and two shiny shells. By the time they left, everyone was tired, sandy, and very happy.

Passage 2: Hedgehogs (non-fiction)

Hedgehogs are small, spiky animals that live in gardens and woodlands across Britain. They are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and come out at night to search for food. A hedgehog's favourite foods are slugs, beetles, and worms. When a hedgehog feels frightened, it curls up into a tight ball so that only its sharp spines are showing, which keeps it safe from predators like foxes. In winter, hedgehogs hibernate โ€” they find a cosy pile of leaves and sleep until spring arrives.

Passage 3: The Treasure Map (fiction)

On Saturday morning, twins Mia and Leo found an old, faded map hidden inside a dusty book in their grandmother's attic. The map showed a path through the back garden, past the oak tree, and down to a spot marked with a red X. Excited, they grabbed a spade and followed the path exactly as the map showed. After digging carefully for ten minutes, Leo's spade hit something hard. They pulled out a small wooden box, and inside it was a handful of old coins and a note that read: "Well done, treasure hunters!" It turned out their grandmother had buried it there years ago as a game for whoever found the map.

๐ŸŽ‰ All done?

Great job working through the workbook! Remember: 15โ€“20 minutes a day, mixing one spelling task with one maths task, works better than doing everything at once.
